The Global Spine Care Initiative (GSCI) has obtained funds for a project in Pimicikamak (Cross Lake First Nation), Manitoba, Canada. This announcement is made in collaboration with the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR), the University of Manitoba, The Canadian Chiropractic Research Foundation (CCRF), and the Canadian Chiropractic Association (CCA).

What is the connection between low back pain and mortality?

Low back pain is one of the most common health problems in the population. About 80% of people will suffer from back pain at some point in their life, usually during adolescence or early adulthood. Low back pain is the leading cause of years lived with disability – a measure of the burden of disease – and has a greater impact than more well-known diseases such as HIV, malaria, diabetes, and breast and lung cancer combined.

Although research has been done to determine whether back pain is associated with an increased death rate, the results have not been consistent.

A new systematic review tried to clarify these results.

A new paper from World Spine Care and the Global Spine Care Initiative was recently published in the journal JMIR Public Health and Surveillance.The article describes the process that the authors underwent to develop the guides for Managing Neck and Back Pain in the Time of COVID-19 released last year. The guides help empower patients to self-manage spine pain when appropriate.
